The Authors Among Us

Thursday, November 18, 2021 14 Kislev 5782

7:30 PM - 8:30 PMOnline

You are cordially invited to join us for the  Panel Discussion Event showcasing 6 authors—three from BHPC and three from BJC— with a Q&A session to follow.  The panel members’ books represent a range of different types of books, chosen from the list of the many fantastic books that BHPC and BJC authors have written.

The Authors Among Us is a joint congregational program of BHPC and BJC through the Inter-Congregational Partnership Committee (ICPC).  Marty Ganzglass and Karen Levi from BJC and Marilyn Allen and Mary Hickey from BHPC are leading the project.  Please let us know if you have questions or comments.

Gregg Easterbrook

Gregg was a staff writer as well as a national correspondent or contributing editor of The Atlantic for nearly 40 years.  He was a fellow in economics and in government studies at the Brookings Institution, and in 2017 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Gregg is the author of 13 books on a wide-variety of topics.  His latest book is The Blue Age: How the US Navy Created Global Prosperity—And Why We’re in Danger of Losing It.  His book is at once a reminder and a warning.  It reacquaints the reader with the vital role of the sea for free trade and economic development, and focuses the mind on how the destinies of nations often turn on who controls the oceans and waterways of an ever-shrinking world.  Climate change and global politics are examples of two important factors that will affect the future of the seas.  In his personal life, Gregg and his wife Nan Kennelly have been members of BHPC since 2000.

Marty Ganzglass

Marty is a retired labor lawyer, turned author.  He has drawn on his service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Somalia for two of his books – Somalia-Short Fiction and The Orange Tree. Branching out, he has written a six-book series of historical novels about the American Revolution.  In these books, he has told the stories of ordinary people including the “invisible minorities” — free African Americans serving in the Continental Army, women and Native Americans — who all too frequently are left out of the history of the American Revolution.  His latest book is a work of fiction Goats and Other Stories, which includes ten short stories set in current times.  Marty is member of the BJC Board and serves on their Social Action Committee.  Along with Judy Ozone (BHPC), Marty is Co-Chair of the Inter-Congregational Partnership Committee.  He is also a long-time volunteer at The Friends Club.

Diane Horn

Diane is the author of 7 Simple Ways to Discover Your Wow Factor.  She has been active in the wellness field for over 25 years as a Registered Dental Hygienist and Certified Life Coach.  In her business, the Vibrant Lady Boomer, she shows smart, savvy women how to "rediscover their best and reinvent the rest.” Her book is a guide for women over 50 who want to live the second half of life with passion, purpose, and play.  In her personal life, Diane is a member of BJC.

Karl Klontz

Karl is a Physician/Epidemiologist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  As an infectious disease epidemiologist, he investigates outbreaks.  His medical thrillers (Stand At Bay, Mirrors, The Leopard’s Lines, Latitude Revenge) blend medicine, epidemiology, travel, adventure, and justice.  As a side endeavor, he travels each year to some of the most remote parts of the world to install solar power systems in villages with no electricity.  At BHPC, Karl works with young people who want to study and prepare to join the church (Confirmation).  He also enjoys ushering on Sundays to greet and see fellow worshippers on the way in and out of church.

Karen Levi

Karen became a writer after retiring from the Montgomery County (Maryland) School System as a Speech Pathologist.  After trips to China and Germany with her mother, Karen published a memoir, Love and Luck—A Young Woman’s Journey from Berlin to Shanghai to San Francisco.  Before writing her second memoir about WWII and its impact on her family, she wrote a novel about women’s issues, A Glass Shattered.  Her second memoir, A Smile That Lasts Forever is about her father’s family and their journey out of Nazi Germany to San Francisco.  Karen serves on the BJC Board of Trustees and the Social Action Committee.  She sings in the BJC choir and is a member of the Inter-Congregational Partnership Committee.

Andrew Wolvin

Andy earned a Ph.D. and is a Professor in the Department of Communications at the University of Maryland-College Park.  Additionally, he is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown Law.  Andy's research centers on listening behavior.  A widely published scholar, he and his wife Darlyn are the co-authors of Communicating, A Social, Career and Cultural Approach  and The Public Speaker/The Public Listener.  At BHPC, he serves as the Director of the Chancel Players, a small drama group that enhances the worship experience.
